Nature Series 1/5

These are the before and after pictures of the first picture in my nature series. This was taken with a point and shoot camera. In this picture, you can see the structure of the plant which is really interesting because it has a nice pattern to it. The plant begins to close in the deeper you go into it which is clear to see with the angle that I had taken this picture. There are scratches and marks on the plant which I thought were interesting as well because although it shows the plants imperfections, it accentuates its beauty.
I wanted to upload the picture before I had photoshopped it because it shows how much adjusting the contrast of the picture makes that much of a difference. The entire picture pops up more and grasps the audiences attention all through the color, angle, and structure of the photo.

Angle Assignment

This is a picture of my friend Janay. I don't know why, but I had noooo difficulty with this assignment unlike all the other ones. Once I stepped outside the classroom, I had so many ideas and this picture is just one of them. This was a good experiment with angles because I had Janay crouch on the floor with the picture in my head of someone climbing up a building. When I got to the computer, I flipped the picture and it now looks like Janay is climbing up something. I wanted to photoshop a building into it so it would look like she was using super powers to climb up the building, but I couldn't find the perfect one so I decided to leave it like this. Overall, this turned out really good and helped me with angles.

3 Landscapes

I actually took these landscapes earlier in junior year. I wasn't satisfied with the flower pictures that I took for this project so I went through my old files on my computer and came across these 3. The first one I took was from a trip I had to Arizona. It's one of my favorite sights to see everytime I go up there. There's this certain spot on our way up there where the sand is just so smooth, you just want to get out of your car and just mess it all up. I love how it looks "summery" and the sand looks extra brown and it looks good with the blue sky. The second picture that I took is at seaport village at Marina Bay. This one is pretty special to me because I always go there to think. The water looks AMAZING because it's not just one shade of blue. The rocks are also different colors which vary from light brown to gray. The third picture I took is from the top of the ferris wheel at the del mar fair. I took this last summer and I love the way the lights pop out and you see the motion from the rides. There are hundreds of people and if you really think about it, it's amazing how you can capture so many lives in just one photo.

I photoshopped each and every one of these and its pretty cool how much photoshop can change a picture.

Landscape Written Assignment - Joseph Bellows

I chose to do my landscape written assignment on this photograph taken by Joseph Bellows. I had a number of pictures to choose from that all caught my eye, but when I saw this particular picture with the buildings and lights, it made me feel a certain way that's hard to describe, so I knew it had to be this one! I love everything about this picture. The fact that there is no spot on the whole picture where you don't see a building with lights on. I'm also really glad that this photo is in black and white. If it were in color, I think it would have taken a lot away from the picture. The fact that it's black and white allows the lights from the buildings to pop out more which has an amazing affect.

This picture is also very mysterious. It's obviously a city, but you can't tell from this one picture where or when it was taken. Bellows has got me to think that this photograph is to show how many lives fill these cities. Millions of them, all with different stories. I also picture this place to be a busy but comfortable place to be. I also love how it's not taken from the typical skyline angle. It has a little bit - but not entirely - a birds eye view. I'm in love with everything in this picture!

Natural Lighting

This natural lighting assignment is of my best friend Aaysia. She is a very special person to me because of everything that we've been through together and the fun memories that we have shared. In this picture she is wearing a blue shirt that looks really good with this natural light. Her face is glowing and you can see that she is thinking about something that is very deep. When I took this picture, the wind was blowing and you can see a piece of her hair that shows us that. The image is in focus and is not abstract. It would have worked well if I just focused on Aaysia and had everything else in the back out of focus, but either way I think that this picture turned out good.

Timeline Project

I was in a group with Carmen and Briana for our timeline project. It wasn't a very difficult project for us to do because we had a pretty good imagination and knew what we wanted it to look like from the start. We started off with first getting all the information that we needed from the web and wrote it all down. It kind of sucked because I wrote really sloppy and I couldn't even read my own handwriting! So I typed it up on word and printed it out so that it would be easier for both me and my group mates. After we got the information we had to decide on how our timeline would look like. We didn't want it to be just the average lookin' timeline with sharpie on white poster paper, so we decided on using chalk on a black cardboard. We spent a period sharpening the chalk. It was boring and tedious and it wasn't really necessary, but it's all gravy.

When we actually started writing on our actual timeline, I started to get worried about how we would be able to write all our information down with chalk because of how bulky it was even though we had sharpened it. I realized after I had wrote the first thing that it would be extremely difficult to read if I continued writing with chalk. So I scribbled it out with chalk and made it look like it was meant to be like that. We then cut up the words that we printed out (which wasn't our original plan, but it worked out good) and then glued them onto our timeline.

The end result looks beautiful! Extremely colorful and unique :)

Anything But Clothes!

In our ABC (Anything But Clothes) photo shoot, we spent a lot of time and effort into everything - from our outfits, hair and makeup, and the actual pictures itself. In this picture, we are outside and you can see the grass and trees in the background. You can't really tell, but there's a dumpster behind me which fits into our theme of the shoot. We chose to do trash items. Carmen is wearing newspapers, Ava is wearing toilet paper, and I'm wearing a trash bag. These are all items that you would find at the dump and we chose this location specifically for the dumpsters. The models are close to the camera, but far enough to see the outfits that we worked so hard on. For the most part the image is in focus, but on the bottom and the right side, you can see that it's a little blurry. This was done accidentally. I photo shopped this picture up a little bit because it was way too light and there were empty spaces above our heads. I cropped it, changed the contrast, and converted the photo to black and white. We were trying to show the life of those people who have no clothes to wear and spend their time digging through trash to get by. We took an ordinary trash bag and turned it into a dress. And with a little creativity, we made an exotic looking newspaper dress and a flow-y toilet paper gown! It was difficult looking for a picture that I liked enough to put on my blog because one of us would always be blurred out. Or Carmen would do that grunt kind of look with her eyes. But for the most part, I believe that this photo shoot was extremely successful. Me and my group put a lot of effort into this (especially Krystle) and it was definitely rewarding to see this as our end result.

Manjari Sharma

I never really thought that there was too much of a difference between a portrait and a snapshot. I just thought that a picture was a picture and that was that! But by reading the Manjari Sharma article, I learned a lot more about the differences between these two types of photography. This article explained that a snapshot is a a posed picture that really has no meaning. It could be a picture of you and your family taking a picture in front of the new family car and it would be categorized as a snapshot because it is a picture that is somewhat staged and pretty much fake. When I found out that this is what a snapshot is, I figured that a portrait is more of a candid picture. I realized that I was wrong and even a staged picture that you would think would be categorized as a snapshot may actually be a portrait if there is meaning in the photo. A portrait doesn't always have to be candid, but just as long as it has meaning and it isn't staged, then you can give it the title of one.

Manjari Sharma's portraits are amazing. I really enjoyed looking at the pictures of the people that she took in the shower because it shows how vulnerable we are when we're doing something thats comfortable to us. I believe that we are our true selves when no one is around and Manjari showed through her pictures that we don't have to put on a mask for anyone when we are alone. This is a brilliant idea to photograph people in their shower because the intimacy shows that everyone is human, we all have feelings, and everyone has that sensitivity and vulnerability in them - even though we may not think that from the things that we initially see and judge them by.

Photoshop Brushes

For this assignment, we learned more about photoshop and how to use the brushes. I really enjoyed this assignment because I learned to take an ordinary photo and turn it into something more interesting. I had trouble figuring out what I wanted to paint onto my picture, so I just clicked on a random brush and started doodling all over it. I was seriously getting really frustrated but then Ms Miles came by and said that the pink random squiggly line that I had looked good. I was surprised and when I looked at it a little more, I began thinking more into it and seeing that it could be something I could work with. I used pink because it matched my shirt and looked on the color wheel and used a sort of blue-ish green as my other color. I decided to draw another crooked line with that color and then finished it off with a little bit of pink at the bottom.

Even though this assignment was difficult, it was still fun. The project that we did in class helped me a lot because I learned that it helps if you have something touching all the sides. I tried my best on this photo assignment and I think that I did a good job for my first time using brushes!

In this photoshop assignment, we had to make our picture and the lighting look softer. I did everything correctly and followed along as the teacher was doing the steps, and although I got confused, my picture turned out good. The process in editing this picture wasn't difficult at all because of the help we got from the website and the teacher. I thought it would look just a bit more lighter on my face, but I can definitely see the difference. There is more of a angelic glow to me and I am much lighter.

Photobooth Assignment

This photo booth assignment was one of my favorites of this semester. I think the reason for that is cause we got to take pictures of ourselves instead of other people. I mean, we're always fooling around on the photo booths anyways! Haha. I took about 20 pictures on the photo booth and it took forever for me to figure out which ones I wanted to use. I chose these four specific pictures because it shows my different personalities. My crazy, ghetto, hippie, and "just Chelsea" sides :) So this assignment was a personal kind of thing as well. Although I had tons of fun taking these pictures, it was SUCH a pain trying to pick which ones I wanted to use. I also had a hard time with photoshopping this and putting it all onto one page. I was confused with how to crop, copy, and paste it. & had trouble with the spacing of it.  But it ended up turning out good! :) Yay!!

Photoshop Elements

In this photo, I used a picture that I shot back in the beginning of the school year of Briana and put it onto a picture of clouds. I first opened the photo of Briana and used the lasso tool to cut around her body. I then opened up the picture of clouds and pasted the cropped picture of Briana. I began to move her around and see where I should position her. I tried putting her on the bottom right and then the top cnter, but positioning her in the center seemed perfect. The edges seemed a little rough so I used the eraser tool to make the edges seem softer. I wanted to make this picture seem as realistic as possible and not as if I copied and pasted.

I love the way my model looks like an angel in the clouds looking at the earth below. I think I did an amazing job even though I had difficulties with erasing (because I'm not that patient and my hand is so shaky! lol). But other than that, I actually enjoyed editing this and the best part of this project is the fact that I did it all by myself! (with help from Ms. Alvarez :P )

Studio Lighting

In this assignment, we had the opportunity to work with studio lighting. In this figurative photo, I shot Darchelle and Janay in front of a white background. It is a candid picture of them laughing about a joke that was made. The image is in focus and the tone of this picture is very interesting. This picture was taken indoors and the image turned out darker than I had planned. I don't think my work was as successful as I had hoped it would be because the lighting is more focused on Janay than it is on Darchelle. I should have had Darchelle move into the light more or moved the light back. There is also an akward gap between the two models. Other than that, I love how naturally the models are posed in this picture since it's candid. I also love the way the shadows add that extra flavor! (:

Motion

In this photo, we were working on motion. What i see in this picture is Taeok in some sort of leap while his friend Rhona is chasing after him. I see a bush, trees, people, and a building that aren't that far away. This photo was  figurative because you are able to see what the photo is of. The work is organized in many different ways. The image is in focus which was done intentionally to capture Taeok in his leap. The tone of the picture is just perfect. It's not too dark or too light. What I tried to communicate through this picture was Taeok and Rhona's determination for the dance off. Even outside of the dance room they take their energy with them. He is also wearing a junior jersey ;) This picture was taken outdoors and the lighting worked out wonderfully. What I think of this picture is that it captured Taeok's wonderful  looking "fierce" but graceful movement. I think it added that extra thing to it as well that Rhona is in the back trying to catch up with him. This photoshoot I had was a success :)

Depth of Field

In this assignment, we focused on depth of field. I used Carmen, Shayla, and Eric for this picture. Besides the models, I see lunch tables, trees, and a trash can. The trees in the back add a good effect to the picture because of how far away they are. The work is pretty organized and the shapes and the tones came out pretty good. The light is focusing more on Carmen, and the two in the back don't have much light shining on them. The image is focused because you can clearly see what the models are wearing and what they are doing. This was done intentionally. I thought the image was just perfect. The two models in the back are darker than the main model which made it known that she was the subject of this photo shoot. This photograph was taken outdoors. I think this photo shoot was successful because I achieved the assignment of focusing on a subject and blurring the background.

REFLECTION:

In this candid photo of Briana and Shayla, I see two friends having a good laugh together. This shot was taken outside and it is pretty light. There is a building behind them with plants in the background as well. The image was in focus and it was done intentionally. What I tried to communicate through my photo was the friendship between these two girls. It was after a joke that was made and I thought quickly to take a picture of it. I think this shot was successful because it has meaning to it and although all pictures capture important moments in life, I believe that the most memorable ones are candids where the pictures really capture us in the moment. I wanted for this picture to be a little darker because the white on Briana's shirt blends in with the color of the paper, but other than that I am very pleased with my shots.
